Today’s Rundown:

  • WHITE HOUSE REVIEWING SMITHSONIAN FOR TRUMP‑ALIGNED EXHIBITS: The White House ordered a wide review of eight Smithsonian museums to ensure their shows match President Trump’s view of U.S. history before the nation’s 250th birthday. They want the exhibits to highlight American greatness and remove what they call “divisive” stories. Smithsonians say they’ll cooperate but aim to keep the facts accurate. Historians worry this could hurt independence and fairness in how history is shown.
  • TREASURY’S BESSENT VOWS TO BAN CONGRESSIONAL STOCK TRADING: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he plans to push for a law that stops members of Congress from trading individual stocks. He said such trades hurt public trust, as some lawmakers earn returns better than hedge funds. The issue has been debated in both parties, but some members still oppose a full ban.
  • AIR CANADA CANCELS FLIGHTS AHEAD OF FLIGHT ATTENDANT STRIKE: Air Canada announced it will begin cancelling flights starting Thursday because its flight attendants plan to strike Saturday. The airline warned of a full shutdown by the weekend and told customers they’ll get refunds or help with rebooking. The strike follows a long disagreement over pay and work conditions.
  • AT&T CUSTOMERS COULD GET UP TO $7,500 IN SETTLEMENT: AT&T agreed to pay $177 million to settle claims from data breaches that happened last year. If you were affected, you may be eligible for up to $7,500 in compensation—but whether you are depends on how badly you were affected and the settlement’s rules.
  • STARBUCKS KOREA BANS BULKY OFFICE GEAR IN STORES: In South Korea, Starbucks is asking customers not to bring big work items—like desktop computers or printers—into its cafes. The goal is to stop people from turning stores into remote offices and keep space free for everyone.
  • TRAVIS KELCE ADMITS NFL PERFORMANCE SLIPPED AMID ACTING PURSUITS: Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce told GQ that his performance on the field over the last two years hasn’t been up to his own standard. He said this happened because he was busier with acting, hosting, and other entertainment work. He’s now focused on bouncing back and winning another Super Bowl.
  • ‘KPOP DEMON HUNTERS’ SING‑ALONG EVENT COMES TO THEATERS: The hit Netflix animated film KPop Demon Hunters is getting special sing‑along screenings on August 23 and 24 in select U.S. and Canadian theaters. Fans will be encouraged to sing with the movie, and tickets go on sale starting August 13.
  • GODFATHER OF AI: DESIGN AI WITH MATERNAL INSTINCTS TO PROTECT HUMANITY: AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, called the “godfather of AI,” says we should build future AI systems to have caring, motherly instincts toward people. He warned that trying to control AI might backfire, and only compassionate AI will keep humans safe as it becomes more powerful.
