Today’s Rundown:

  • ERIKA KIRK NAMED TO LEAD TURNING POINT USA AFTER HUSBAND’S KILLING: Turning Point USA’s board unanimously chose Erika Kirk to serve as CEO and chair following the fatal shooting of her husband, TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk. In a video statement, she vowed to carry on the group’s mission and keep its campus network active heading into the 2026 midterms. The decision comes as the organization grapples with security and succession questions. Investigators meanwhile continue the multi-agency hunt for answers in the killing. Supporters and conservative leaders publicly welcomed the appointment.
  • DAVID LETTERMAN SLAMS ABC OVER PULLING ‘JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE!’: David Letterman criticized ABC’s decision to put Jimmy Kimmel Live! on ice after Kimmel’s commentary related to the killing of Charlie Kirk. Speaking at a public event, Letterman called the move “managed media” and warned about political interference in broadcast decisions. Other late-night hosts also voiced support for Kimmel. ABC has not announced a return date. The show’s slot has been filled with alternative programming in the interim.
  • MISSISSIPPI OFFICIALS AWAIT AUTOPSY IN DELTA STATE HANGING DEATH: Authorities in Mississippi say they are awaiting autopsy findings after 21-year-old Demartravion “Trey” Reed was found hanging from a tree on Delta State University’s campus. Officials have said early reviews showed no signs of assault, and campus leaders reported no ongoing threat to students. Reed’s family is seeking an independent autopsy and has urged transparency. The case has drawn national attention and calls for federal review. Counselors and support services have been offered to the campus community.
  • JUDGE ORDERS MAHMOUD KHALIL DEPORTED OVER GREEN-CARD OMISSIONS: An immigration judge ruled that Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil can be deported for failing to disclose certain affiliations on his permanent-resident application. Khalil’s attorneys say a separate federal court order currently prevents his removal as their appeal proceeds. The case stems from his pro-Palestinian activism and prior detention, which his legal team calls retaliatory and unconstitutional. The government and Khalil’s lawyers continue to spar over national-security claims. Further appeals could take months.
  • MAN DIES AFTER COASTER RIDE AT UNIVERSAL’S NEW EPIC UNIVERSE PARK: A man in his 30s became unresponsive after riding the Stardust Racers roller coaster at Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe and later died at a hospital. The medical examiner ruled the death an accident caused by blunt-impact injuries but did not specify where the injuries occurred. Universal expressed condolences and closed the attraction during the investigation. Safety reporting rules require major Florida parks to log serious incidents with the state. The park, which opened in May, has reported several medical incidents since launch.
  • META DEBUTS AI SMART GLASSES AND A NEURAL WRISTBAND AT CONNECT: Meta unveiled “Ray-Ban Display,” its first consumer smart glasses with a built-in screen, plus an AI-driven wristband controller. CEO Mark Zuckerberg pitched the glasses as a next step in hands-free computing, with U.S. availability set for Sept. 30 at a starting price of $799. A live demo saw some hiccups, but Meta says the hardware and software will continue to improve. Analysts say the push aims to keep momentum in Meta’s AR/AI ecosystem. The company is positioning the lineup for everyday capture, navigation, and assistant features.
  • ‘SOUTH PARK’ DELAYS NEW EPISODE HOURS BEFORE AIRTIME: Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone announced they didn’t finish the episode in time and bumped it a week. In a rare public note, they joked that doing everything at the last minute sometimes means missing a deadline. The show now plans to air the episode on Sept. 24, with an every-other-Wednesday cadence to follow. Comedy Central has not detailed any further scheduling changes. Fans largely took the news in stride online.
  • SABRINA CARPENTER TO STAR IN SETH ROGEN’S NEW MUPPETS SPECIAL: Disney+ ordered a 2026 special celebrating The Muppet Show’s 50th anniversary, with pop star Sabrina Carpenter set to appear and serve as an executive producer. The project from Seth Rogen and Point Grey Pictures is designed as a back-door pilot for a potential series revival. Veteran Muppet performers are attached, with Alex Timbers directing and Albertina Rizzo among executive producers. The special aims to blend classic variety-show chaos with current musical moments. Additional casting and production details are expected closer to release.
