2003: In what became known as the “Mission Accomplished” speech, U.S. President George W. Bush declared “major combat operations in Iraq have ended” on board USS Abraham Lincoln off the coast of California. He added that “difficult work” remained ahead.

2011: President Barack Obama announced the death of terrorist Osama bin Laden. (It was May 1 in the U.S. when bin Laden died, May 2 where he died.)
