Today’s Rundown:

  • SENATE ADVANCES FIRST STEP TO END LENGTHY SHUTDOWN: The Senate cleared an initial 60–40 procedural vote to move a compromise funding bill forward, the first of several steps needed to reopen the government. The plan funds agencies now and schedules a later vote on ACA tax credits, a key sticking point. Leaders in both parties said more votes are coming within days, but House timing remains uncertain. Federal services and workers remain strained as closures continue.
  • TRUMP BOOED AT LIONS–COMMANDERS, FIRST SITTING PREZ AT NFL GAME SINCE ’78: President Trump attended Detroit–Washington, becoming the first sitting U.S. president at a regular-season NFL game since Jimmy Carter. When shown on the videoboard, boos were audible, including during a halftime enlistment ceremony he led. The visit came amid an ongoing government shutdown and Trump’s recent sports-themed appearances. He left before the end of the game.
  • BBC DIRECTOR GENERAL AND NEWS CHIEF QUIT OVER EDITED TRUMP FOOTAGE SCANDAL: BBC Director General Tim Davie and News chief Deborah Turness resigned after backlash over an edited segment that misrepresented Trump remarks, part of broader criticism of BBC impartiality. Davie said continuing controversy made his position untenable despite board support. The departures come as the BBC faces political pressure and funding talks. Reform debates are expected to intensify.
  • FLIGHT CANCELLATIONS MOUNT AS FAA ORDERS CUTS DURING SHUTDOWN: With staffing shortages worsening, the FAA began mandating capacity reductions, first around 4% and warning cuts could reach 20% if the shutdown drags on. Thousands of flights have faced delays or cancellations, especially at major hubs. Airlines and unions say unpaid “essential” workers are stretched thin. Travelers should expect rolling disruptions even after ground stops lift.
  • UPS GROUNDS MD-11 FLEET AFTER DEADLY LOUISVILLE CRASH: Following a fatal takeoff accident at its Louisville hub, UPS temporarily grounded its MD-11s—about 9% of its fleet—citing manufacturer guidance and safety concerns. FedEx also grounded MD-11s as the NTSB probes the cause, including reports of an engine issue shortly after liftoff. The move may ripple through holiday logistics. Safety inspections are underway.
  • OPENAI FACES SEVEN LAWSUITS ALLEGING CHATGPT CAUSED HARM: AP reports seven suits claim ChatGPT contributed to suicides or severe delusions, raising questions about AI safety and liability. OpenAI has previously argued users are warned about limitations and that the technology has benefits when used responsibly. Legal experts expect lengthy battles over causation and speech protections. Regulators are watching closely as AI adoption accelerates.
  • ANTONIO BROWN ARRESTED ON ATTEMPTED-MURDER CHARGE IN MIAMI SHOOTING: Months after a warrant was issued, former NFL star Antonio Brown was taken into custody on an attempted-murder count tied to a May altercation at a boxing event, according to multiple outlets. Police allege he fired shots during a fight; a victim reported a grazing injury. Brown has faced prior legal issues and team suspensions. A court appearance is expected soon.
  • MARK SANCHEZ EXITS FOX AFTER STABBING INCIDENT: Fox confirmed former NFL QB and analyst Mark Sanchez is no longer with the network following a stabbing incident in which he was injured; a trial is slated next month. Details of the internal personnel move were not disclosed. Sanchez has worked for multiple networks since retiring from the NFL. The case remains under investigation.
  • FLORIDA’S OLIVIER RIOUX BECOMES TALLEST PLAYER EVER TO APPEAR IN AN NCAA: GAME: Florida’s 7-foot-9 center Olivier Rioux made his collegiate debut in a 104–64 win over North Florida, setting an NCAA height record. The redshirt freshman, recognized by Guinness as the world’s tallest teen, checked in late to roaring chants. He didn’t record a stat but drew huge crowd reaction. It’s a milestone moment for the Gators big man.
  • PETE DAVIDSON RETURNS TO ‘SNL,’ ROASTS HIMSELF AND JOST OVER FERRY FIASCO: Davidson popped in on “Weekend Update” to joke about the money-losing Staten Island ferry he co-owns with Colin Jost, leaning into headlines that dubbed the purchase a fiasco. He quipped about fundraising gigs and poked fun at Lorne Michaels. The surprise cameo landed well online with plenty of clip shares. The pair bought the decommissioned ferry in 2022.
