Eight Things To Talk About For Tuesday, August 20, 2019

These are the top maybe-not headlines from the past 36-hours presented by The Conversation Project from raw engagement data from our social media to the headlines posted over the past day.

The 8 topics that our followers ranked as the most conversational are:

KEVIN SMITH IS MAKING A NEW HE-MAN CARTOON FOR NETFLIX
The press release also quotes Smith as saying that he’s “Eternia-ly grateful” to Mattel and Netflix for letting him work on this show, which is a very groan-inducing pun, and he teases that Revelation will be “the Masters Of The Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid.” That pun isn’t the only questionable thing about the press release, though, as Netflix—once again—is insisting on calling this an anime show even though it’s being made by an American guy and coming from an American animation studio (Powerhouse, which also worked on Castlevania).

The Amsterdam-based influencer proudly shares her unedited photo outtakes with her 390,000 followers, posting them alongside the enhanced version to show that what people see on social media isn't always realistic. In an era in which it's not uncommon for people to go to extremes in the name of portraying a perfect image online, the 26-year-old said she feels like she has a responsibility as an influencer to give her followers a reality check. She does this by sharing and celebrating her photoshoot "bloopers."

NYPD FIRES OFFICER DANIEL PANTALEO FOR CHOKEHOLD IN ERIC GARNER'S DEATH
NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill announced he'll enforce an administrative judge's recommendation, made this month, that Pantaleo be terminated over the July 17, 2014, confrontation as Garner was being arrested on Staten Island for selling loose, untaxed cigarettes. Pantaleo, who has been with the NYPD since 2006, was suspended as soon as that departmental verdict was reached, in keeping with long-standing practice when there is a recommendation for firing. The 13-year veteran had been on desk duty as his case made its way through legal and administrative circles.

'MAN LEAVING WORK AFTER FIVE YEARS PRANKED BY CO-WORKERS WITH CARD OF JUST FOUR SIGNATURES
Imagine how Reddit user NubShakeZ felt, then when he received this giant leaving card from his co-workers with just four signatures and greetings on it. Posted the photo of the sorry card to Reddit, he wrote: "I'm leaving my job after 5 years today, over 500 people I work with, this is my leaving card. To be fair, thinking that people like you and then finding out they actually don't is worse than knowing people don't like you. You can almost see his heartbreaking in the photo. Especially, as a little later in the thread he writes: "Apparently I'm the most liked in my department."

CRISTIANO RONALDO ADMITS HE PAID $375,000 TO RAPE ACCUSER, DENIES GUILT
Kathryn Mayorga had claimed she took the money from CR7 back in 2010 as part of a private settlement — and has previously said she signed a confidentiality agreement vowing to keep her mouth shut about the alleged incident. As we previously reported, Mayorga claims she met Ronaldo at Rain Nightclub in the Palms hotel in June 2009 and went to party with him in his penthouse suite … where he raped her. She went to police, but never identified Ronaldo by name — only describing him as a huge soccer star.

Sociology doctoral student Morgan Johnstonbaugh, who conducted the research, explained her findings at the American Sociological Association Annual Meeting in New York City earlier this month. The University of Arizona researcher looked into what motivates young people to send sexually explicit images of themselves over text and collected data from more than 1,000 college students, with an average age of 20, from seven US universities.
